Lockdown 2020: design tips to work remotely from home
With the recent government restrictions in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus, we have but one choice: #STAYHOME! Millions of people are working remotely, and at AFLUX we make no exception. While for some of us this new work-from-home situation is no news, for others this is a completely unfamiliar and unexpected experience. While adapting as a team to a new routine and different working methods, we realized that our houses are adapting too. After all, as designers we are aware of the impact and power that the surrounding space has on us. That is why we decided to share with you some quick and easy design tips to create the best home working space as possible, that you can follow without going out shopping, of course!
Tip n.1 - Pick a spot (just one!)
For most freelancers, working from home is not a big issue, but for the majority of us, it takes discipline to get out of bed and get productive, especially if we have kids and other family members around. A space that’s dedicated for work is key to being productive, especially during lockdown.
While we strongly suggest that you don’t choose your bed, sofa or the kitchen table, we are aware that sometimes the options are very limited, so exceptional situations call for exceptional measures.
Ideally, your working space should be quiet, airy and well lit, with power sockets nearby and some kind of storage (even a dedicated box will do). Once you have organised your home office, make it a habit to clean and tidy up the space everyday. It is essential to file all the important papers, discard old papers and keep things back in their designated places. This will help you to keep the home office clean, well-organised and clutter-free.
Tip n.2 - Sit near a window
Where possible, try to stay near a window. Other than ensuring you can get enough fresh air and plenty of natural light, setting up near a window will keep you inspired and attentive during your home office hours. The ideal position – suggested by psychology and Feng Shui principles – would be sitting with your back to the wall with a view of the window. A view of trees or even a landscape picture can help to increase the ability to focus.

Tip n.3 Calming and inspiring design complements
This is very much down to personal choice as what brings serenity to one person may not to another, but given that you will be spending a lot of hours in this space, you want to make sure that it is relaxing, pleasing and inspiring.
Studies have shown that being around plants can ease the mind, reduce stress and even improve productivity. So, placing some greenery near your desk is a great and simple choice to boost both your physical and mental wellbeing. Also, adding a scented candle, room diffuser or scented humidifier can make it more enjoyable staying at your desk and you may experience different effects on your mood depending on the chosen scent or essential oil.
Tip n.4 Give it some personality!
To make your space really feel “yours” and unique, you can also add pieces that are inspiring and make you happy but that don’t distract you from your tasks. They can be everything: from a colourful pillow, to your favourite mug or a piece of art… Sky’s the limit here.
So, are you ready to set up your home office? ;)
